About Date with History
Our Date with History series, now in its 15th year, features presentations by authors, historians, documentarians, and veterans on a variety of military history topics. Visit Cantigny or attend online to connect with these experts in a lecture and Q&A format.
Our nation’s highest award for valor has a history as rich as our nation’s. Join us at Cantigny Park to learn about this “hallowed emblem”; how it came into being, some of its notable Recipients, its connection to Cantigny and the Army’s 1st Infantry Division, and its place in our collective memory. A member of the FDM’s Education Team and part of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s Education Team will lead a discussion about the Medal, its history, and the Recipients.
MEET THE SPEAKER: Javier Martinez is a Marine Corps Veteran, having earned his Commission through the NROTC Program at Notre Dame. For the last 15 years, he has taught US History, AP US History, and Military History at Kaneland High School in Kane County. Javier is also a National Trainer for the Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s Character Development Program (CDP), which uses the stories of our nation’s Medal of Honor Recipients to teach youth about what it means to live the Core Values of Courage, Commitment, Citizenship, Sacrifice, Integrity, and Patriotism. The CDP is used in schools across the country in classrooms ranging from Elementary to High School. Most recently, he has joined the Programs and Education Team at Cantigny.
