DESCRIPTION:Date with History\nThe Remarkable History of the U-505: From Battle to Capture to Exhibit\nThursday June 19\, 6pm\nVisitors Center Theater\nFree with paid parking \nThe Griffin Museum of Science and Industry is home to the one and only U-boat of its kind (type IX-C) in the United States\, and it is one of only four left in the world. In this presentation\, Dr. Voula Saridakis will share historic details on the remarkable capture of the submarine\, which was kept secret for over a year\, its journey from New Hampshire and across four of the five Great Lakes to Chicago\, the engineering feat of moving the 252 foot vessel into a new indoor space\, and the most recent conservation efforts to preserve this historic war memorial.\n\nRegister \nAbout the Speaker\nDr. Voula Saridakis is the Head Curator in the Collections and Archives department at the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry. During her time at the Museum\, she has been responsible for the research and development of content for several exhibits including U-505 Submarine: 75 Stories\, the Henry Crown Space Center\, the 90th anniversary exhibit 90 & Beyond\, and Steelmakers.  \nDr. Saridakis is a historian of science and technology by training with 19 years of college-level teaching experience in subjects including history of science\, women and gender in science\, world civilizations\, European history\, and women’s history. Her Ph.D. is in Science and Technology Studies (interdisciplinary history\, philosophy\, and sociology of science and technology) from Virginia Tech.
