SUMMARY:Date with History: Desert Redleg: Artillery Warfare in the First Gulf War
DESCRIPTION:Date with History\nDesert Redleg: Artillery Warfare in the First Gulf War\nColonel (Retired) L. Scott Lingamfelter\nThursday June 4\, 6pm\nSpace is limited\, advance registration is required. \nJoin us for a presentation by Colonel (Retired) L. Scott Lingamfelter\, as he discusses his experience as an artilleryman in the First Gulf War through the lends of his book\, Desert Redleg: Artillery Warfare in the First Gulf War. When Saddam Hussein’s Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990\, triggering the First Gulf War\, a coalition of thirty-five countries led by the United States responded with Operation Desert Storm\, which culminated in a one-hundred-hour coordinated air strike and ground assault that repelled Iraqi forces from Kuwait. But there is much more to that story. Though largely forgotten in descriptions of the war\, an eight-day barrage of artillery fire made this seemingly rapid offensive possible. At the forefront of this offensive were the brave field artillerymen known as “redlegs” in support of the Big Red One’s initial assault on the Iraqi 26th Infantry Division and the onward attack by the division of Iraqi Republican Guards positions deeper inside Iraq and Kuwait. \nIn Desert Redleg: Artillery Warfare in the First Gulf War\, a veteran and former redleg of the 1st Infantry Division Artillery\, “Big Red One”\, Colonel (Retired) L. Scott Lingamfelter\, recounts the logistical and strategic decisions that led to a coalition victory.  Drawing on original battle maps\, official reports\, and personal journals\, Lingamfelter describes the experience of the First Gulf War through a soldier’s eyes and attempts to answer the question of whether the United States “got the job done” in its first sustained Middle Eastern conflict.  Part military history\, part personal memoir\, this book provides a boots-on-the-ground perspective on the largest U.S. artillery bombardment since World War II.\n\nRegister \nAbout the Speaker\nColonel (Retired) L. Scott Lingamfelter lives in Woodbridge\, Virginia\, and attended the Virginia Military Institute\, where he earned a B.A. in History in 1973. After graduating from VMI\, he was commissioned in the Regular Army and began a career as a Field Artilleryman and a Middle East Foreign Area Officer. \nIn 1981\, he completed his M.A. in Comparative Governments of the Middle East and Soviet Foreign Policy from the University of Virginia. After many assignments in Europe\, Asia\, and Middle East\, both in command and staff positions\, he retired in 2001 to pursue a second career as a legislator in the Virginia General Assembly where he served from 2002 to 2018. \nColonel Lingamfelter accumulated significant experience in the war-torn Middle East as a military observer with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization in Israel\, Lebanon\, and Syria. He later served with the 1st Infantry Division during Operation Desert Storm as the Executive Officer of the Division Artillery that planned and executed the largest field artillery assault on enemy forces since WW II. \nA 1997 graduate of the US Army War College\, Colonel Lingamfelter now devotes his time to writing professionally and routinely contributes to The Washington Times on national security topics.

SUMMARY:Date with History: The American Revolution and the Fate of the World
DESCRIPTION:Date with History\nThe American Revolution and the Fate of the World\nVisitors Center Theater\nWednesday July 29\, 6pm \nSpace is limited\, advance registration is required. Cantigny parking is free with advance online registration. \nJoin us for an evening lecture with Dr. Richard Bell on his latest book The American Revolution and the Fate of the World — an electrifying global history of a not-so local war. \nWhen we think of the American Revolution\, we often picture a parochial drama: thirteen colonies squaring off against the British Crown in a spirited bid for independence. But this version of the story is only half the truth — and perhaps not even the most interesting half. In this riveting program\, historian and author Richard Bell invites audiences to rediscover the Revolution as a world war that unleashed chaos\, opportunity\, and transformation across six continents. From the sugar fields of the Caribbean to the court of the King of Mysore\, from refugee camps on the Canadian frontier to political uprisings in Sierra Leone and Peru\, the war that gave birth to the United States was never simply America’s own. It was a seismic global event that redrew maps\, toppled hierarchies\, catalyzed migration\, and accelerated new movements for liberty — and for empire. \nIn this program\, Bell traces the far-flung reverberations of the war through the lives of the people it displaced\, empowered\, or destroyed. Participants will encounter a Native matriarch struggling to preserve a transatlantic military alliance\, a Prussian officer reinventing himself in a foreign army\, and a Boston schoolteacher shipwrecked thousands of miles from home. Along the way\, Bell explores how the Revolution stirred a transoceanic refugee crisis\, ignited antislavery activism\, and inspired uprisings from Ireland to India. The program offers a bold new framework for understanding the Revolutionary War not as a tidy founding moment but as a sprawling\, high-stakes struggle fought on land and sea\, shaped by commerce\, diplomacy\, propaganda\, and contingency. This is the American Revolution as you’ve never seen it before: complex\, global\, and astonishingly relevant to the modern world.\n\nRegister \nAbout the Author\nRichard Bell is Professor of History at the University of Maryland and author of the book Stolen: Five Free Boys Kidnapped into Slavery and their Astonishing Odyssey Home which was a finalist for the George Washington Prize and the Harriet Tubman Prize. He has held major research fellowships at Yale\, Cambridge\, and the Library of Congress and is the recipient of the National Endowment of the Humanities Public Scholar award and the Andrew Carnegie Fellowship. His new book\, The American Revolution and the Fate of the World was published by Penguin in November 2025. He maintains a list of upcoming events at Richard-Bell.com.
