Brassard

Before the 1st Division had official divisional insignia, officers wore French-made armbands (called brassards) with the numeral ‘1’ on them. Major Paul Ransom, 2nd Machine Gun Battalion, wore this brassard while serving as Brigade Machine Officer on the 1st Brigade staff. The archival photo shows Colonel G. Marshall wearing a very similar brassard.
