1990 - 1991

Novelty Button

This novelty button was not the most popular Gulf War collectible, but it reflects the goal attained by Coalition Forces. In August 1990 the Iraqi Army invaded Kuwait. When diplomacy failed to convince Saddam Hussein to remove Iraqi troops from Kuwait, 35 countries sent soldiers to force the Iraqis out and to defend Saudi Arabia from possible invasion. In January 1991 a five-week aerial bombardment laid the groundwork for an invasion that followed in February. Coalition ground troops forced the Iraqi Army from Kuwait after 100 hours of fighting.

Phyllis Fitzgerald was serving with the Military Intelligence of the 1st Infantry Division when Kuwait was liberated. She earned the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3 and served in the Army for over two decades. Since then she retired from the military, became mayor of Junction City, Kansas, and now is one of its commissioners. She currently runs the Society of the First Infantry Division.
