To

The Adjutant General U.S.A.

Washington D.C

Sir,

I have the honor to submit for your consideration the following statement- About the 1st of December 1865, while serving with company D. of my regiment at Brownsville, Texas, I received an order of which the following is a copy-

“War Department

Adjutant General Officer

Washington Oct. 25th 1865

“Special Orders

No. 568

“Extract

“17th The following transfers in the 4th U.S. Artillery are hereby announced- 2nd Leuit- 10th Ennis from Company F to Battery G- the officers thus transferred will join their proper batteries without delay-”

“By order of the Secretary of War

(Signed) E.D. Townsend

Apt. Adjt. General.

Now this order did not state the location of my battery, and the only information I had concerning it was an order of Gen Grant’s directing it to report to Lt. Gen. Sherman at St. Louis-

Accordingly I went first to St Louis arriving there early in January 1866, and upon going to Lt. Gen. Sherman’s Hd. Qu[arte]rs was there told by a staff officer that he believed my battery was at Little Rock, Arkansas, but that at any rate it was in Gen. Popis department and I would find out by going to the Head Quarters-

At Gen Popis Hd. Qu[arte]rs I was informed that my battery was at Little Rock, A[rkansa]s- I went to the latter place and not until I arrived there did I discover the mistake, when I learned that it was at Detroit- Mich- I received milage from New Orleans La to Detroit Mich, but for this journey from St. Louis Mo. to Little Rock Arkansas and back to Cairo, Ill. I have received no equivalent whatever- I made it in good faith and upon the best information I would procure, and I respectfully request that I may be allowed to collect from the quartermaster at this place the amount of seventy-two dollars as shown by the accompanying vouchers.

I am sir

very respectfully

your Ob[edien]t Serv[an]t

Com Ennis
